Kids in College is out of this world

Approximately 160 elementary students are having fun learning critical thinking skills this summer in Lenoir-Rhyne’s Kids in College summer enrichment camp for academically gifted children.

The program is being held June 16-27 on campus. Half of the students attend in the morning, and half participate in the afternoon. This year’s theme is “Up in the Sky,” according to Suzanne “Susy” Morrison, program director. The children are participating in a lot of hands-on activities. They will be visiting the Catawba Science Center’s Millholland Planetarium. On the last day, they will perform skits for their parents.

On a recent day, students in one room had divided into small groups. They were competing to see who could build the highest tower out of playing cards or newspapers. In another room, students were drawing pictures of the solar system. Afterward, they participated in a quiz about the planets called “Name that planet!”

Younger children were busily coloring the phases of the moon, making booklets about the moon, or writing poems about the moon. All children are participating in drama activities each day. For more photos of Kids in College, click here.

Students help save hemlocks

Several Lenoir-Rhyne students recently learned how much hard work can be involved in helping to protect the environment.

Seven students in the spring semester biodiversity class spent a day applying insecticides to Carolina Hemlock trees that are being attacked by the hemlock woolly adelgid. This tiny insect was accidentally imported from Asia in the 1950s and is now threatening the entire Eastern Hemlock and Carolina Hemlock population on the east coast.

The class was helping to treat Carolina Hemlocks growing on five acres of mountainous forest owned by The Nature Conservancy. The property is in the Hickory Nut Gorge near Asheville.

The hemlock woolly adelgid, named for the protective covering it spins to protect its eggs, is usually fatal to Eastern Hemlocks and Carolina Hemlocks within four to 10 years after they are infested. There are no effective North American predators, so treatment options are limited, according to Megan Sutton, manager of the Mountains District Stewardship Program of The Nature Conservancy. (more…)

Lenoir-Rhyne College has announced the President’s and Dean’s Lists for the 2008 spring semester.

Qualifying students for the President’s List must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.9 or better on a 4.0 scale, provided the student carried at least 12 hours of letter-graded courses.

Qualifying students for the Dean’s List must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, provided no grade was below a “C” and the student carried at least 12 hours of letter-graded courses.

Lenoir-Rhyne to offer Jazz Day Camp

The Lenoir-Rhyne Music Program is currently accepting registrations from middle school and high school instrumentalists for its first “Lenoir-Rhyne College Jazz Day Camp.” The camp will take place from Monday, July 21 through Friday, July 25, with a concert on Friday evening.

The camp will meet in the Mauney Music Building at Lenoir-Rhyne from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Every student will participate in jazz big band, improvisation and theory classes with professional musicians and educators leading every session.

Tuition for the week is $175, and includes the cost of lunch each day. The Jazz Camp is under the direction of Dr. Christopher Nigrelli, associate professor of music at Lenoir-Rhyne.

Any student who has completed at least one year of band, as well as 2008 high school graduates are welcome to participate in the camp. Traditional big band instrumentation includes saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass, piano and drums, but anybody on any band instrument is welcome to participate in this camp.

L-R students need places to volunteer

Hickory area non-profit organizations are invited to participate in Lenoir-Rhyne’s annual volunteer day, Hands on Hickory. Groups of 20 students will be doing volunteer work from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 16.

If your organization would like to have L-R students do volunteer work on this day, please contact Candace Semmel at 328-7375 or semmelc@lrc.edu. Organizations are asked to sign up by June 13.

Air Quality Conference set for June 13

How does air quality affect our daily lives? What does “non-attainment” mean? What do new federal air quality standards mean for local businesses? Participants in the Second Annual Unifour Air Quality Conference will learn the answers to these questions, and more.

This free conference will be held from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. June 13 at Lenoir-Rhyne College. Seating is limited, and advance registration is required by June 9.

This event is co-sponsored by the Reese Institute for Conservation of Natural Resources at Lenoir-Rhyne, the Unifour Air Quality Committee, Western Piedmont Council of Governments and the Greater Hickory Metropolitan Planning Organization. (more…)

Pope Shuford named Business Leader of the Year

The Lenoir-Rhyne Business Council has named A. Pope Shuford its 2008 Business Leader of the Year.

Shuford is chairman of the board of Shuford Mills, LLC/Shurtape Technologies, LLC. His family business, as a manufacturer of textile yarns – Shuford Mills – grew over the years to include a tape division which today is a stand-alone company known as Shurtape Technologies. Both of these businesses are headquartered in Hickory and have operations in the Unifour. Shurtape also has operations abroad.

For more than 40 years, Shuford has been a vital part of the success of these companies. A life-long Catawba County resident, he officially retired in 2000 from Shuford Mills and Shurtape, but continues to provide leadership as board chairman. (more…)

The Spirit of Black Mountain College slated for Sept. 25-27

The Spirit of Black Mountain College, a celebration of the internationally renowned experimental college on its 75th anniversary, will be held at Lenoir-Rhyne College Sept. 25-27.

The celebration is being presented by Lenoir-Rhyne’s Visiting Writers Series, which will be celebrating its 20th anniversary, and the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center of Asheville. All events will take place on the Lenoir-Rhyne campus in Hickory or at the Hickory Museum of Art.

Black Mountain College was an independent, coeducational, four-year college that operated from 1933 to 1957 in the mountains of western North Carolina. It emerged as a reaction to the traditional higher education of the day, which stressed conformity and rote memorization. Black Mountain College was formed with the idea that the creative arts and practical responsibilities are equally important in the development of the intellect. It integrated academic study with the arts and farm work.

Several artists now known around the world were associated with Black Mountain College as teachers or students. These included writer Charles Olson, composer John Cage, architect Buckminster Fuller, dancer and choreographer Merce Cunningham, poet Robert Creeley, and potter and poet M.C. Richards. The following painters also taught at the school: Josef Albers, Jacob Lawrence, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline and Robert Motherwell. The recently deceased painter Robert Rauschenberg was one of its most famous students. (more…)
